MATER is a tender carving celebrating Motherhood.

Elizabeth Aulatjut was part of a small group of displaced Inuit who took up stone carving as they adjusted to the sedentary settlement life.

She was a matriarch in her community.

Many of her carvings depicted mothers nursing their children.

Her tenderness and elementary style elevated her to a leading artistic voice of her generation.
