Oqutaq was an exceptionally talented carver. He was in the first wave of artists in the 1950s whose carvings where promoted to the Montreal Guild by James Houston.
The ivory is still pristine white; the artistry is sophisticated and unexpected.
Many pieces of this vintage are more primal.

GOOD WILL HUNTING is a historically important sculpture.
In 1949, when Sheokjuq Oqutaq carved these two stunning ivory Inuks, he would have been living a traditional life which would have included living in an igloo.
In the 1950s, he started carving with James Houston.
His carvings mostly depicted animals, including loons, narwhals, bears, and whales..
The Ivory allows the black details like the facial features, hair and parka trim to soar with drama.
The emotions of the faces is exquisite!
And the postures of the man and his son, are that of a pair engrossed in both a teaching moment and a loving paternal bond!
From November 1988 to January 1989, his work was displayed in an exhibition called "The Sculpture of Sheokjuk Oqutag" at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection.
His works are held in the permanent collections of the National Gallery of Canada, the University of Lethbridge Art Collection, the National Museum of the American Indian, the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, and the University of Michigan Museum of Art.
